For a character to maintain a mystery, it's atmosphere and backgrounds must be laboured with numerous layers of fact, fiction, opinion, truth, lies and the other viscera of intrigue. The best characters hide much, but do not do so in a way that makes it obvious that they do hide something; Their layers, when peeled back, reveal something shocking and surprising every time. The deeper and older the character, the more fleshed out, hides more for there is more to hide and bury down into the deepest cracks of their personality and memory. It is the duty of the observer, roleplay partner, protagonist, antagonist et cetera, to dig out these minute kernels of information and discover more about these characters.
